 Olonana Camp

Olonana

Olonana is located in the Masai Mara, the heart of Kenya's big game country.

14 spacious en-suite tents border the banks of the Mara River where the resident hippo spend their days wallowing. A wide range of game viewing and cultural activities are available and the great wildebeest migration is present in the Mara from around July to October each year. Olonana earned a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya for our innovative wetlands and tree-planting projects and the mini-spa and pool further mark Olonana apart.

LOCATION

On a private stretch of the Mara River at the foot of the impressive Siria Escarpment.

GETTING THERE

There are daily scheduled flights and private charters to the Mara. Flights from Nairobi take approximately 45 minutes and luggage is restricted to 15kgs per person in a soft-sided bag.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

Olonana is a small luxury camp with 14 spacious en-suite tents. Each tent has floor to ceiling mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, flush lavatories, solar lighting and large, river view verandahs.

The main dining room and veranda commands a dramatic stretch of the Mara River providing the perfect setting for breakfast, afternoon tea and after dinner star gazing.

There is a swimming pool, a mini spa and a small gift shop. Solar power supplies 240v electricity and there is a back up generator.

ACTIVITIES

Included in the rates is game viewing drives, a cultural visit and, weather permitting, a bush meal or sundowner.

 Game Drives

The Mara is a fabulous place for seeing big cats and all of the big five, a variety of plains game and over 300 bird species. From around July to October, there's the greatest show on earth - the wildebeest migration - when grunting herds of wildebeest and zebra rush across the rivers between Tanzania and Kenya, attended by crocodile, lion and cheetah.

 Cultural Interaction

We work closely with a Masai village which we help support by offering employment and donations to various community projects. Visit the village for an insight into their ancient customs and still traditional way of life.

 Spa

Between activities relax at our mini-spa which offers a range of treatments from facials to body massages. We use worldwide recognized Africology and French marine-based Thaigo products.

 Additional Activities

Take a balloon safari ending with a champagne breakfast or book a trip to Lake Victoria with the option to go fishing and visit the fishing village.

ENVIRONMENT & RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

Olonana earned a Silver award from Ecotourism Kenya, with solar power, a wetlands which cleanses wastewater before returning it to the natural environment and a tree planting initiative which offers an opportunity to purchase and plant an indigenous tree leaving a positive mark on a piece of Africa.

CLIMATE & CLOTHING

Kenya's climate is characterized mainly by warm days and cool evenings. April/May usually sees intermittent rains and in November scattered rains fall. Clothing should be cool, casual and comfortable. Jackets may be required in early mornings and evenings, especially during the cooler months of July and August. Muted colours are recommended and long trousers and sturdy, comfortable shoes are advisable for walking. A Complimentary Laundry service is offered.
