the lakes found on the floor of The Great Rifts Valley
is Lake Naivasha, a beautiful freshwater lake, fringed
by thick papyrus. The lake is almost 13kms in dameter,
but its waters are shallow with an average depth of five
metres. The lake area varies greatly according to
rainfall, with an average range between 114 and 991 sq
kilometers.

Lake Bogoria found in
the Ngendelel escarpment of the Great Rift valley is sight in the
wild to behold; the lake is set at the bottom of a trough at the
base of the 600 meter high escarpment .
On the western shores
of Lake Bogoria’s is a bed of hot water geysers or springs and
blowholes, which sometimes erupts to hights between 2.5 to 3 meters
(8 to 10 ft) into the air, and constantly emit a pungent sulfur
smell. The water emitted is at boiling point and dangerously hot.

Lake Nakuru National
park lies in the Great Rift valley, 140km north-west of Nairobi.
The ecosystem comprises of the lake, surrounded by
mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a
wide ecological diversity with Flamingos (Greater and
Lesser) and other water birds being the major
attractions of the area. The ecosystem provides for
about 56 different species of mammals including the
white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial
birds numbering nearly 450 species.
